What Is the Mysterious Generation of Matthew 24? – March 23, 2023

Debate abounds regarding Matthew 24:34. Is this generation those who were alive in Jesus’ day? Is it the Jewish race in general? Is it those who will be alive at the time of Jesus’ return? Much of how we interpret the entire chapter of Matthew 24 hinges on the understanding of verse 34.

What I would like to do is step back from commonly cited arguments for a moment, and instead focus on the plain flow of thought of Jesus in the immediate context of the narrative. Let us read Matthew 24:32-37.

“(32) Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; (33) so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door. (34) Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. (35) Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. (36) But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. (37) For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.”

Notice first, that verses 32-33 regard seasons. Jesus beckons us to the simple truth that we are able to discern the coming of summer, because of the coming of spring. In general, we know that the season of springtime weather and plant growth points to the general time of summer. We mark the exact day on the calendar that a season changes, but we know that the weather and growth patterns do not follow a hard and fast rule. It can snow in spring. It can get be cold in summer. Flowers may pop out of the ground earlier than the calendar dictates because seasons are broad phases of time.

Jesus is first telling his disciples to discern seasons. He is beckoning them to look upon the events and foreshadowing of events of which He has spoken just previously – wars, earthquakes, famines, false teachers, antichrist influences, lawlessness, etc. These, the Lord says, are the beginnings of the birth pains (verse eight). These general occurrences will happen more frequently and more intensely as the season of Christ’s return draws nearer.

However, the Lord continues in the chapter to speak with specificity about the Abomination of Desolation that will come during the Great Tribulation (verses 15-21). Jesus warns His followers that the temple in Jerusalem that is to be rebuilt toward the end of days will be invaded by the Antichrist, as he ruthlessly pursues the Jews and all who refuse to worship him. Jesus reminds his disciples that those who live during this time are to run for the mountains to experience God’s divine protection. Then, the crescendo of events leads to the glorious second coming of the Lord, accompanied by signs in the heavens (verses 29-31).

On the heels of all this narrative, Jesus speaks of the season of His return (verses 32-33), before moving quickly to the day and hour of His return (verses 36-41). There is a great difference between a season and an hour. Seasons are broad, sweeping periods of time, while a day and hour are rather specific and narrow.

In between the season and the day/hour, Jesus declares, “Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:34-35) Notice how he uses the phrase “pass away” three times in these two verses. The emphasis is that: 1) this generation will not pass away until every detail of what Jesus has foretold happens; 2) heaven and earth will surely pass away; and 3) God’s Word will never pass away.

Do you recognize the flow of thought with Jesus mentioning “passing away” three times? He says, in effect, that there is a day that “this generation” will pass away, but it is not until every single Word that God has spoken about the end times comes true. He proclaims, in neat alignment with this thought, that heaven and earth will also pass away. The contrast is about what will not pass away – the Word of God.

In other words, Jesus is wanting us to know that not only will the world as we know it one day be gone, but “this generation” as we know it will also be gone. We must rely solely on the Word of the Lord. We are very apt to rely on things that we should not. We assume society will go on and on. We assume the universe will go on and on. The Lord makes clear that society as we know it – and the world as we know it – have an appointment of judgment with God Almighty. In the meantime, every single detail that the Lord has specified about the end times will come true. All of the book of Revelation will be fulfilled. All of the details in the prophetic parts of the book of Daniel will come true. All the events of Matthew 24 will take place. Every word of God as presented in the canon of Scripture will happen, and – after all of the events of the tribulation have concluded – then the ungodly social order that we have all lived under for so long, will be terminated. After the people are judged, then the created order itself will be judged and remade.

In fact, this is what we find in Revelation chapters 20-22. The Great White Throne Judgment is the final demise of all who have rejected Jesus and His righteous kingdom, followed by the making of a New Heaven and New Earth. I see the same flow of thought in Jesus’ words of Matthew 24:34-35. The current, godless age (this generation) will pass away first – after every Word of God is fulfilled concerning end times – then, the old heavens and earth will pass away.

The word for “generation” in the Matthew 24 text, is the same Greek word used in Mark 8:38, where Jesus declares, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” We see here the word “generation” used to contrast the current, evil age to the time of the return of Jesus Christ. This is precisely what we see in Matthew 24! The Greek “genea” can simply mean “an age, the period or the persons.”

I believe that Jesus is giving to the disciples in Matthew 24, a clear explanation of end-time events sequence. We are to watch for the season, knowing that serves as a warning that the day/hour could come completely unexpectantly within the season. The Lord also wants to emphasize that nothing He has told us will go unfulfilled. Though the evil society we have known has an end date, and the broken creation in which we have lived has an end date, the Word of God stands forever!

Whether we are the people who see the season or see the day/hour, we live during a godless generation (or age) that must meet its end under the judgment of holy God. Jesus and His Word is our only safety in all of this.

Surely, the society of people alive at the day/hour of the return of Christ, will be the evilest of all, under the tyranny of Antichrist and the great delusion the Lord sends (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12). In a sense, that particular and literal generation also will not pass away until the Lord has fulfilled every word of His own concerning the end of time. We can apply the meaning generally to this evil age (as compared to the day the Lord reigns unhindered), or specifically to the evil time of society during the tribulation. Nonetheless, the interpretation still stands. The old has to go; the new has to come.

Are you prepared?

Prophecy Pieces

There is much going on in the continents of Europe and Asia. The nations of NATO continue to grapple with Russia’s horrendous war on Ukraine. Turkey has experienced devastating earthquakes. Unrest continues ad infinitum with Israel and surrounding countries. China and America are at odds over spy balloons.

Please think about something. The world began in the Middle East. Over there between the Tigris and Euphrates River is where the Garden of Eden was likely located and where the Tower of Babel incident occurred. Where God started the world, is where it will end.

Russia and Turkey are part of the nations of Gog and Magog, a league of powers that will come against Israel in the end-times but will be utterly destroyed by a miraculous intervention of the Lord. (Ezekiel 38-39)

Turkey boasts the home of Mount Ararat, where Noah’s ark landed. Also, the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are sourced in this country.

Ukraine is on the border of Russia and European nations. Russia will stand against the antichrist, who himself will be aligned with a western confederacy of leaders based in the area of Europe. Antichrist will temporarily protect Israel and promote the reinstatement of temple sacrifices in Jerusalem. Once Russia and other nations are defeated by the Lord, even as they come against Israel and antichrist, the door will be opened for antichrist to become a world leader during the second half of the tribulation, known as “The Great Tribulation.” (Revelation 13, Matthew 24:21)

China will no doubt be a part of “the kings of the east” who march over the newly dried Euphrates River for the Battle of Armageddon in Israel. (Revelation 16:12-16) Of course, King Jesus will utterly destroy all the powers that unite against Him in the end-time war. Then, comes the Millennial Reign of Christ!

It is incredible to realize how the Bible has prophesied events that are yet to happen, but as good as done. We see every piece sliding into place.

Read the news through the lens of the unchanging and eternal Word of God!

Temple Mount Tensions & Prophecy – September 15, 2022

Temple Mount Tensions & Prophecy

The coming Antichrist inevitably sets himself up in the temple of God and proclaims himself to be God. (2 Thess. 2:4) Of this fact, there is no doubt. It will happen midway through the Tribulation. This will take place in Jerusalem, at the Temple Mount.

The prophet Daniel declares by inspiration of God’s Spirit, “He [Antichrist] will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’ [set of years]. In the middle of the ‘seven’ [set of years] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” (Dan. 9:27)

Antichrist will be the one who is finally able to resolve the Temple Mount issue in Jerusalem between Jews and Palestinians. He will enact a peace treaty with Israel and allow the Jews to reinstitute their Old Testament sacrificial system. (Plans for this are already well underway; check out the Temple Institute of Jerusalem.) For now, the Temple Mount is a constant source of battle, as the Muslim “Dome of the Rock” shrine now sits on the temple mount. Jews and Muslims both desire to pray and worship at the Temple Mount.

“Temple Mount is a near-constant point of tension in Jerusalem.” This quote is from an online article at “The Jerusalem Post” on Sept. 13, 2022, titled, “Jewish, Arab activists issued restraining orders from Temple Mount.”

Things are ramping up over there in Israel around this area held sacred by both Jews and Muslims. The biblically prophesied Antichrist will be given the power to barter peace in the area that lasts for 3.5 years, in which time Jews will engage in their sacrificial system at the newly built temple. When the 3.5 years is over, Antichrist will break his treaty with Israel, throw off the help of another group of ten world leaders who had assisted him, and he will demand to be worshiped from that same temple. He will proclaim himself to be God of the world.

Revelation 13:5 declares, “And the beast [Antichrist] was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months [3.5 years].”

And Revelation 13:15 proclaims, “And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.”

When you hear news from the Middle East, including that of rising tensions over the Temple Mount and religious worship, take note. The Lord has prophesied from the Old Testament into the New Testament that these things would take place. We are now living in the time of the end. We may be in the last days, or – more likely – the last of the last days.

In any case, all that is happening in the world aligns with the setting of the stage for God’s end time plan. It could be any day that Christians meet Jesus in the air.

Outside the Box

“I pray that you . . . may have power . . . to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” – Ephesians 3:17-18

“He measured the city with the rod and found it to be . . . as wide and high as it is long . . . I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” – Revelation 21:16,22

A simple square
Of length and width,
So distinct, and very clear.

If it is raised
And given height,
A cube it now becomes.

In three dimensions,
Volume calculated
By length times width times height.

I can determine
The amount of space
My cube occupies.

Multiply, I will
The length by width by height.

My basic math procedures
Will not suffice, however,
To measure the amount of love
My God has for me.

Little cubes
In the three space dimensions I know
Have capacity determined
By how long and wide and high.

But the love of God,
In dimensions unknown,
Has magnitude unbelievable!

Paul prayed
That we would have the power to grasp
How long and wide and high and deep
Is the love of Christ.

Four dimensions to the expanse of God’s love!
Exceeding all I know in this world alone,
Defying my calculations,
His love goes a dimension deeper.

Oh, Lord,
We need your love
To be as long as our lives endure,
As wide as our unfaithfulness,
As high as Heaven can take us,
And as deep as human misery goes.

Oh, Lord,
Your love’s volume
Covers all I know,
And all I don’t know.

We read of your love’s dimensions
In the vision you gave to John.

He saw the New Jerusalem
Come down from Heaven,
Measuring as long as it is wide as it is high –
A perfect cube.

And then He saw,
In that glorious city
Of length and width and height,
No temple did abide.

For the fourth dimension –
The depth of that city –
Is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb.

Beyond all comprehension,
Deeper than any physical glory could ever be,
Stands the love of God in Jesus,
The Lamb slain for you and me.

So when tempted to think
All is lost –
That we could have possibly exhausted
The length and width and height of
The love we grasp,

Remember the added dimension –
The depth –
The unfathomable depth –
That passes our understanding –
The depth of the love of Christ.

How long, how wide, how high
And – gloriously –
How deep
Is the love that makes me think
“Outside the box.”

Hope Found in Four Little Words

Half-hearted dedication stinks. We crave whole-heartedness – true devotion! Something in the soul of human beings longs for passion. Mediocrity is not attractive to us in any arena of life; and the reason is a simple one. The God who made us designed us for fervent worship. Mediocrity does not bring good results in sports, careers, relationships, studies, or any other area. It is repulsive in much the same way a mediocre relationship with God is abhorrent to Him. Our lives are designed to be all-consumed. We feel right when we are completely used up for God’s sake. I am content when my efforts have been spent, my words have been spent, my emotions have been spent, my body has been spent, and my intellect has been spent for the purpose of Someone greater than me. That Someone is the transcendent, personal God of the universe. I want to live a life of zeal for my God.

Perhaps this is why the words of Revelation 3:15-16 can sting so badly. Let us consider our lives – not in the broad sense – but in the everyday moments of living. Let’s think about our deeds: the way we arise in the morning, the look on our face when we meet someone before our first drink of coffee, the conversation we have over lunch, the way we approach housework, the way we approach our career, the goal we have in human encounters, the way we entertain ourselves, and a myriad of other actions. Are these things done rightly from a heart of passion that puts God’s glory at the forefront? Or are our deeds sadly reflecting a heart that has lost its fervor for God’s purposes in all things?

Picture a thermometer. The top line represents a red-hot relationship with Jesus Christ, the kind of relationship where His glory is your goal no matter the cost; you are consumed by an incomparable love for the Lord. The bottom line represents a quite dead, cold relationship with Jesus Christ. In fact, an affiliation this icy could hardly be considered a relationship. Now, on that thermometer, where would you place your relationship with God? At the very top line? At the very bottom? If you are like most people, you probably will not put it in either of those places, but somewhere in between. Perhaps you may even choose a level close to the top, but most likely – if we are honest – not at either extreme.

Given that assessment, let’s now hear the words of Jesus in Revelation 3:15-16 (NIV), “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” Yikes! This does not sound good for people who are “in the middle somewhere.” Jesus sees exactly where we are, and He is disgusted at a lukewarm heart. The Lord is so disgusted; He informs us that He would vomit us out of His mouth. Though I would not want to be a part of any regurgitation process, I most certainly would not want the Lord of my life to be repulsed by my heart’s status. Sadly, I know there have been times in my life when I was on the receiving end of this horrifying rebuke.

My hope is found in four little words of verse sixteen, “I am about to.” The New International Version seems to render the Greek word most accurately. The original word means “to be on the point of doing something; to intend; to have in mind.” In other words, Jesus – because of our repugnant lukewarm status – is ready to vomit us out of His mouth, but He has not yet done so. This is tremendous! I deserve to be spit out, but Jesus is giving one window of opportunity with those four all-important words, “I am about to.” Let the words roll through your mind. Say them aloud, “He is about to.” He has not yet, but He certainly will unless we turn around. Thank God, we can!

Verse twenty of the same chapter informs us that Jesus is standing at the door of the lukewarm heart and knocking. He is taking the initiative; He believes we may just let Him in. If a man or woman opens the door, He will come in to have genuine, passionate relationship with that person. O blessed day, when Jesus comes in to make one who should be spit out into one who dines with the God of the universe!

Four life-changing words spoken by Jesus – “I am about to.” I love those words. A window of hope.
