Artificial Intelligence in the Church

People get vehemently angry about artificial intelligence generating sermon material for spiritual leaders, and yet for years and years, we have allowed false teachers to creep into the church of Jesus Christ. Many have placed their own Bibles aside during the week. Countless ones have refused to commit Scripture to memory. Multitudes have flocked to what appear to be entertainment venues in order to be uplifted by pep talks peppered with Scripture, rather than to be honestly challenged by the sharp sword of God’s holy Word.

Now, we stand flabbergasted at artificial intelligence. Let me tell you, unknown numbers of “Christians” have been fed by demons through the watered-down, false gospel long before AI became the thing about which to be disturbed.

Far too many Christians ceased to be troubled by the trends of the modern church a long time ago. As a faith culture, we compromised with the devil when we accommodated diluted sermons, so that people could be at peace with their compromised lifestyles and lack of passion for Jesus Christ.

When the church’s view of Scripture diminished, when we could no longer tolerate long sermons and teachings, when we began to value the look of the “stage” and the “worship leaders” more than the content of the Word of God, when how our buildings appeared to the world mattered more than how the sermons appeared to the Lord God Almighty, that is when we gave in to “artificial” intelligence.

True wisdom comes from the Lord. To be precise, it is found in an honest fear of the Lord. If we had continued in sincere fear of the Almighty God, we would be less worried about artificial intelligence in the church.

Nothing is more artificial than the devil substituted for God. The greatest imposter projected to people, rather than the embodiment of Truth. And yet, here we are …

What Is the Mysterious Generation of Matthew 24? – March 23, 2023

Debate abounds regarding Matthew 24:34. Is this generation those who were alive in Jesus’ day? Is it the Jewish race in general? Is it those who will be alive at the time of Jesus’ return? Much of how we interpret the entire chapter of Matthew 24 hinges on the understanding of verse 34.

What I would like to do is step back from commonly cited arguments for a moment, and instead focus on the plain flow of thought of Jesus in the immediate context of the narrative. Let us read Matthew 24:32-37.

“(32) Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; (33) so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door. (34) Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. (35) Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. (36) But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. (37) For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.”

Notice first, that verses 32-33 regard seasons. Jesus beckons us to the simple truth that we are able to discern the coming of summer, because of the coming of spring. In general, we know that the season of springtime weather and plant growth points to the general time of summer. We mark the exact day on the calendar that a season changes, but we know that the weather and growth patterns do not follow a hard and fast rule. It can snow in spring. It can get be cold in summer. Flowers may pop out of the ground earlier than the calendar dictates because seasons are broad phases of time.

Jesus is first telling his disciples to discern seasons. He is beckoning them to look upon the events and foreshadowing of events of which He has spoken just previously – wars, earthquakes, famines, false teachers, antichrist influences, lawlessness, etc. These, the Lord says, are the beginnings of the birth pains (verse eight). These general occurrences will happen more frequently and more intensely as the season of Christ’s return draws nearer.

However, the Lord continues in the chapter to speak with specificity about the Abomination of Desolation that will come during the Great Tribulation (verses 15-21). Jesus warns His followers that the temple in Jerusalem that is to be rebuilt toward the end of days will be invaded by the Antichrist, as he ruthlessly pursues the Jews and all who refuse to worship him. Jesus reminds his disciples that those who live during this time are to run for the mountains to experience God’s divine protection. Then, the crescendo of events leads to the glorious second coming of the Lord, accompanied by signs in the heavens (verses 29-31).

On the heels of all this narrative, Jesus speaks of the season of His return (verses 32-33), before moving quickly to the day and hour of His return (verses 36-41). There is a great difference between a season and an hour. Seasons are broad, sweeping periods of time, while a day and hour are rather specific and narrow.

In between the season and the day/hour, Jesus declares, “Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:34-35) Notice how he uses the phrase “pass away” three times in these two verses. The emphasis is that: 1) this generation will not pass away until every detail of what Jesus has foretold happens; 2) heaven and earth will surely pass away; and 3) God’s Word will never pass away.

Do you recognize the flow of thought with Jesus mentioning “passing away” three times? He says, in effect, that there is a day that “this generation” will pass away, but it is not until every single Word that God has spoken about the end times comes true. He proclaims, in neat alignment with this thought, that heaven and earth will also pass away. The contrast is about what will not pass away – the Word of God.

In other words, Jesus is wanting us to know that not only will the world as we know it one day be gone, but “this generation” as we know it will also be gone. We must rely solely on the Word of the Lord. We are very apt to rely on things that we should not. We assume society will go on and on. We assume the universe will go on and on. The Lord makes clear that society as we know it – and the world as we know it – have an appointment of judgment with God Almighty. In the meantime, every single detail that the Lord has specified about the end times will come true. All of the book of Revelation will be fulfilled. All of the details in the prophetic parts of the book of Daniel will come true. All the events of Matthew 24 will take place. Every word of God as presented in the canon of Scripture will happen, and – after all of the events of the tribulation have concluded – then the ungodly social order that we have all lived under for so long, will be terminated. After the people are judged, then the created order itself will be judged and remade.

In fact, this is what we find in Revelation chapters 20-22. The Great White Throne Judgment is the final demise of all who have rejected Jesus and His righteous kingdom, followed by the making of a New Heaven and New Earth. I see the same flow of thought in Jesus’ words of Matthew 24:34-35. The current, godless age (this generation) will pass away first – after every Word of God is fulfilled concerning end times – then, the old heavens and earth will pass away.

The word for “generation” in the Matthew 24 text, is the same Greek word used in Mark 8:38, where Jesus declares, “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” We see here the word “generation” used to contrast the current, evil age to the time of the return of Jesus Christ. This is precisely what we see in Matthew 24! The Greek “genea” can simply mean “an age, the period or the persons.”

I believe that Jesus is giving to the disciples in Matthew 24, a clear explanation of end-time events sequence. We are to watch for the season, knowing that serves as a warning that the day/hour could come completely unexpectantly within the season. The Lord also wants to emphasize that nothing He has told us will go unfulfilled. Though the evil society we have known has an end date, and the broken creation in which we have lived has an end date, the Word of God stands forever!

Whether we are the people who see the season or see the day/hour, we live during a godless generation (or age) that must meet its end under the judgment of holy God. Jesus and His Word is our only safety in all of this.

Surely, the society of people alive at the day/hour of the return of Christ, will be the evilest of all, under the tyranny of Antichrist and the great delusion the Lord sends (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12). In a sense, that particular and literal generation also will not pass away until the Lord has fulfilled every word of His own concerning the end of time. We can apply the meaning generally to this evil age (as compared to the day the Lord reigns unhindered), or specifically to the evil time of society during the tribulation. Nonetheless, the interpretation still stands. The old has to go; the new has to come.

Why Did Jesus Not Know the Time of His Return

There is a Scripture that, at first glance, seems confusing. Matthew 24:36 declares about the day of the Lord’s return, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”

We ask the question, “How could it be that Jesus Christ would not know the day or hour of His own return?” We must begin by remembering a few things. Jesus is and was one hundred percent God and one hundred percent human. In His first coming, Jesus came precisely to pay for our sins and provide salvation. In doing so, He limited Himself in many ways.

First of all, Jesus is God, so He is omnipresent. That means that He is all places at all times, and yet, Christ limited Himself to one body, to walk on this earth one place at a time. Jesus is omnipotent; He has all power. Yet, He did not use the power available to Him many times, as when He was nailed to the cross. He could have stopped all that, and He could have used His power in many ways, but He willingly chose not to, in order to provide our full salvation.

It is the same with the omniscience of Jesus. He knows everything, but He chose not to operate by that omniscience in every situation. The instance of Matthew 24:36 happens to be one of those situations. When He came the first time, He descended and lived here in order to make a way for us to be right with God. Jesus knew, that for Him to tell us the day and hour of His return, would be to stop us from being always prepared.

As a matter of fact, just a few verses after this, Jesus shares a parable to speak of the fact that somebody who thinks that Jesus will be delayed – that the Master is not returning soon – is somebody that is actually a hypocrite, who is not truly living for the Lord. (Matthew 24:48-51) We are to always be waiting for Jesus. We are not to know when the rapture of the church is going to take place, so that we are perpetually ready. That is called the imminent return of Christ.

Does Jesus know the point of His return, now that He has been restored to the glory of the Father in Heaven (John 17:5)? I believe that, yes, He does. However, on earth, He withheld that information from even Himself, so that He could instruct us in the way to live and be right with God.

Temple Mount Tensions & Prophecy

The coming Antichrist inevitably sets himself up in the temple of God and proclaims himself to be God. (2 Thess. 2:4) Of this fact, there is no doubt. It will happen midway through the Tribulation. This will take place in Jerusalem, at the Temple Mount.

The prophet Daniel declares by inspiration of God’s Spirit, “He [Antichrist] will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’ [set of years]. In the middle of the ‘seven’ [set of years] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” (Dan. 9:27)

Antichrist will be the one who is finally able to resolve the Temple Mount issue in Jerusalem between Jews and Palestinians. He will enact a peace treaty with Israel and allow the Jews to reinstitute their Old Testament sacrificial system. (Plans for this are already well underway; check out the Temple Institute of Jerusalem.) For now, the Temple Mount is a constant source of battle, as the Muslim “Dome of the Rock” shrine now sits on the temple mount. Jews and Muslims both desire to pray and worship at the Temple Mount.

“Temple Mount is a near-constant point of tension in Jerusalem.” This quote is from an online article at “The Jerusalem Post” on Sept. 13, 2022, titled, “Jewish, Arab activists issued restraining orders from Temple Mount.”

Things are ramping up over there in Israel around this area held sacred by both Jews and Muslims. The biblically prophesied Antichrist will be given the power to barter peace in the area that lasts for 3.5 years, in which time Jews will engage in their sacrificial system at the newly built temple. When the 3.5 years is over, Antichrist will break his treaty with Israel, throw off the help of another group of ten world leaders who had assisted him, and he will demand to be worshiped from that same temple. He will proclaim himself to be God of the world.

Revelation 13:5 declares, “And the beast [Antichrist] was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months [3.5 years].”

And Revelation 13:15 proclaims, “And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.”

When you hear news from the Middle East, including that of rising tensions over the Temple Mount and religious worship, take note. The Lord has prophesied from the Old Testament into the New Testament that these things would take place. We are now living in the time of the end. We may be in the last days, or – more likely – the last of the last days.

In any case, all that is happening in the world aligns with the setting of the stage for God’s end time plan. It could be any day that Christians meet Jesus in the air.

Point of Rapture – September 9, 2022

Point of Rapture

As demonstrated in the historical truth of Sodom and Gomorrah, when Lot was taken out at the last minute before destruction, and as indicated by the Apostle Peter, that the Lord, to our understanding, seems slow to keep His promise of return, because He desires that no one perishes eternally, we know that Jesus will come suddenly to snatch His people from this world right before the judgment of the tribulation.

God is waiting for every last soul that will put their trust in Jesus as Savior to do so. Simultaneously, He is waiting for wickedness to reach a threshold that He will no longer tolerate, to the detriment of His people.

Therefore, when these two factors meet that God-given point of intersection, Jesus will whisk away His followers from this world, and then God will usher in the tribulation period.

The number of truly righteous people declines as the last-days apostasy sets in, and wickedness grows as godlessness and lawlessness increases. Surely, a number of falsely “spiritual” people still exists, but only those dedicated to the truth of Jesus Christ are righteous, for it is only the blood of Jesus Christ that He shed on the cross that can make any of us right with God.

The rapture is coming. Judgment is coming. Jesus is then coming back with His people to set up His millennial kingdom. Amen!

“And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:10-12)

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)

Can We Be Sure About the Election?

The current election cycle is enough to give a person the heebie-jeebies. The ludicrous nature of what is happening concerning the highest office of this country makes me think of the Bible’s truth that as the time of Christ’s return draws nearer, times will grow increasingly difficult or dangerous. “People will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power” (2 Timothy 3:2-5, ESV, emphasis mine). Do any of the aforementioned terms make you think of any of the candidates – or us – the people casting the votes? History has always demonstrated the reality of sin and selfishness in humanity at every turn, but the Word of God does hold forth that this actuality will become more and more rampant and increasingly obvious as time flows on. Jesus likened the proliferation of sin and deception in the last days to birth pains – growing in both intensity and frequency (Matthew 24:8). Jesus Christ also pointed out that deception will intensify (Matthew 24:11, 24). It is no real surprise, then, that each election brings new, shocking disappointments. Placing all events, including this coming election, against the backdrop of God’s grand revelation of truth provides a comfort in tumultuous times.

We cannot be sure about the coming presidential election. We cannot know the result yet, and we certainly do not have much confidence in what will happen after a specific man or woman is put in office. But there is an election that we can be sure about, and that is the choice that really matters. In fact, the solidifying of this particular election can allow a soul to rest in the midst of political chaos and pain. God is always calling us to act obediently with respect to each detailed circumstance of the day and to trust implicitly with regard to the big picture of life and eternity. Our responsibility as citizens of earth is clear, but our responsibility as citizens of heaven is even more explicit. As the Apostle Paul joyfully proclaimed, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself” (Philippians 3:20-21, ESV). My first allegiance is to heaven and all things heavenly. Accordingly, I obey the Word of God in caring for my citizenship on this earth as God commands; and if ever my allegiance to heaven is challenged by earthly government, heaven must prevail every time. In the meantime, God calls me to care for my soul’s position before Him as my foremost priority. He, then, takes care of all else – including, incredibly, my life and the government under which I reside.

Let’s look at the election to which God draws our attention. He speaks the mandate through Peter, an apostle of Jesus who at this specific time of his writing is about to die and enter the Lord’s presence. Peter said, “For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life, so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone” (2 Peter 2:14-15, NLT). So we see that whatever Peter is relaying to us in this passage is of utmost importance, because he wants us to remember it long after he is gone. 2 Peter 1:10 spells it out for us: “Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.” Do you see it here? We are to confirm – or make sure of – our calling and election. The election spoken of here is the election of you by God for His salvation through Jesus Christ. God cast His vote for you when He sent His only Son to die for your sin. In believing in Jesus Christ, you responded to God’s call. The Holy Spirit now admonishes us through Peter that our momentous responsibility is to confirm that election through a life meticulously examined under the lens of the holiness of God and powerfully submitted to righteousness by the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Charles Spurgeon, the “Prince of Preachers” (1834-1892) said it this way, “It requires a great deal of diligence and labor to make sure our calling and election; there must be a very close examination of ourselves, a very narrow search and strict enquiry, whether we are thoroughly converted, our minds enlightened, our wills renewed, and our whole souls changed as to the bent and inclination thereof; and to come to a fixed certainty in this requires the utmost diligence, and cannot be attained and kept without divine assistance, as we may learn from Psalm 139:23 and Romans 8:16.”

Have we recently spent time scrutinizing our election? Are we continually assessing our position with God? It is what we must do to ensure that we “never fall” (2 Peter 1:10, ESV). I am to be responsible as a citizen to vote for a presidential candidate whom I believe has good character traits, but I cannot ensure that fact. My greatest duty is to be sure of my own standing before God. A growing display of the fruit of God’s Spirit in my life, an increased devotion to Jesus Christ, and a growing sensitivity and repulsion to sin are evidence of my election – my having been chosen by God to be His child. This duty is so great that 2 Peter 1:11 (ESV) promises the following, grand result: “For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Did you hear that? Ensuring my election causes me to gain a rich entrance into the eternal kingdom of the Lord! No matter how great a president we have ever had or ever will have, none comes even slightly close to the glory of the King of kings and Lord of lords! No earthly government or kingdom provides the infinite peace and growth of the coming government of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6-7). Though I cannot be confident of what will happen in the next election in the United States of America, I am guaranteed a truly miraculous result when I yield my life to God with earnestness and self-examination.

There is an election of which you can be certain. It is the election of your soul by God through the blood of Jesus Christ. If God commands us to confirm this election, then it, indeed, can be confirmed! God does not cruelly demand the impossible. He means for you to work it out, to keep growing, and to make your relationship with Him the thing about which you invest most of your affection, time, and care. With this priority in place, all other issues fall into their proper place. God will care for His own no matter who wins the presidency. You simply cannot be positive about earthly, government elections; but you can be confident of your heavenly election. And you can count on the One who is sovereign over all (Psalm 47:2, Ephesians 1:11). His kingdom is coming without regard to the presidency. His kingdom is coming for those who make their own election sure.

Birth Pains of the End Times

People and politicians promising deliverance from the ills of the world. War. Threats of war. Entire nations clashing with other nations. Famine. Earthquakes. Persecution of Christians. Betrayal. False teachers making people believe wrong doctrine. Lawlessness. Half-hearted believers. Yet, in all this, the true Gospel is preached everywhere.

Does all this sound like the days in which we live? Surely it does. We do, in fact, live in the last days of which Jesus spoke. Since He left this earth in the early first century A.D., all people have been passing their time in “the last days.” The only question is, “How much longer will the last days … well … ‘last'”? Actually, that’s not the question, because God clearly tells us that we cannot know its answer.

However, our great Savior outlined a pattern we may observe. The pattern does not give us a day, year, or century; but it assures us of the absolute direction of the plan’s fulfillment. We are left with a confidence in the sovereignty of God despite the trouble of the last days.

The troubles and events of the first paragraph of this article are the things of which Jesus spoke in Matthew 24:5-14. He knew that rudimentary methods of war would escalate to more technological and biological methods. He knew that natural disasters would devastate entire regions. He knew that ISIS would drive Christians by the tens of thousands from their homes in Iraq and torture and kill many of them. He knew many false preachers and teachers would water down true Christianity and cause numerous souls to be disillusioned and many hearts to grow cold in their love and faith. He knew that the internet and satellites would make it possible for the Gospel to be preached nearly anywhere.

In speaking of many of these difficulties, Jesus clearly articulated, “All these are but the beginning of the birth pains” (Matthew 24:8, ESV). I want to emphasize His use of the phrase “birth pains.” The Apostle Paul spoke similarly in Romans 8:22 (ESV), “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.” So what has this discussion of such a vivid and trying human experience to do with the last days of history and the whole creation?

Birth pains notoriously increase in intensity and frequency as the time for delivery draws near. Clearly, God wants us to know that all of the difficulties and disasters of which we spoke at the beginning of this article have always been with us, but they will happen with greater frequency and greater intensity as the time of Christ’s return draws near. Wars and Christian persecution and natural disasters and the influence of false prophets and the downgrade of Christian dedication will be on the rise. None of this should discourage us, for Jesus said, “See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet” (Matthew 24:6b, ESV). In other words, we are not caught off guard by the daily news; but we grow ever more prayerful and vigilant, as all the news is just a reminder that the time until God’s final judgment grows shorter. However, none of it happens outside the sovereignty and watchful eye of the Lord!

Jesus said of the “labor pains” that “this must take place.” Yes! Just as the labor pains of a mother must occur in order to ensure the delivery of a child, the labor pains of this world must happen in order for the delivery of the new creation. A woman’s body ramps up the production of certain hormones in order to stimulate delivery. Though the process is painful, the process is necessary. The pains are not for the purpose of destruction, but for the purpose of life! So, too, it is with the delivery of God’s kingdom. The New Heavens and the New Earth will only be born after the labor pains of the end times. We are not to be destroyed by these convulsions, but we are to be prepared by these pains. The distress is meant to push forward the process of delivery – not impede it. The pains awaken us to the reality of our own frailty and inability to navigate the judgment of God without the grace of Jesus Christ. The afflictions prod us to witness to those who are lost in their sin. The pains alert us to the short life of this old, sinful world. The pains get us ready for delivery by making us stronger in difficulty and more vigilant in living.

Birth pains lead to life. The contractions result in delivery and new life. And so it is. Jesus endured the greatest pain ever imagined on the Cross. Using the same Greek root for “pangs” in Acts 2:24 (ESV) as is used for “birth pains” in Matthew 24, Luke declares, “God raised [Jesus] up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.” In other words, the miseries of death could not prevail when it came to the Son of God. He was delivered! The pain led to victory and new life for all who believe.

This is why Romans 8:29 (ESV) declares that Jesus is “the firstborn among many brothers” (emphasis added). After experiencing the pain of the human dilemma throughout His earthly life, Jesus’ “birth pains” intensified toward the end. Hatred for Him and false accusations about Him grew until He was finally arrested, tortured, and crucified. Nonetheless, the pain led to life and resurrection for Jesus and new, spiritual life to all who believe and walk with Him.

Meanwhile, we remain watchful, guarding our lives carefully as we see God’s plan unfold. The labor pains will lead eventually to life. The pangs spur us on to value what is important – to stay focused on our Hope, our Savior. The contractions grow in intensity and frequency, as they lead to the great delivery of God’s people and this creation. Don’t give up as the pain comes; look up to the Ultimate Deliverer. Jesus said, “But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13, ESV).

The End of the World as We Know It

A definite, predetermined, cataclysmic event awaits us. It is not far off, as understood in the context of God’s plan. The world knows it will happen; though people may refer to vague and remote catastrophes such as the earth falling into the expanding sun after a few billion years, or a massive asteroid impact, or dreaded and deadly nuclear war, or a black hole disaster, or any other number of proposed life-ending episodes.

No matter what people propose as the method, something in human nature points to a general feeling of the temporary nature of this world as we currently know it. In their suspicion of final destruction, humans are right. However, the circumstances and the ultimate result are critical.

The infallible Word of God reports to us the glaring and glorious reality: everything of this earth as we know it will be destroyed. Peter is specific, “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare” (II Peter 3:10, NIV). As straightforward as this message is and as threatening as it sounds, God tells us to look forward to this earth’s end (II Peter 3:12). Why? Because the dissolution of what is imperfect and painful means a rebuilding into what is perfect and delightful. Jesus must clear the old to make room for the perpetually new!

Getting back to the heartbeat of Peter’s theme of introspection here, we listen to him say once again, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?” Wow. This is one serious, life-altering question. Everything of this earth and heavens is going to be consumed by fire – absolutely everything. What, then, should be my focus? What should my life look like? What should constitute the moments of my days, the thoughts of my mind, and the affections of my heart?

My life would be quite radical in comparison to the average life if I honestly lived by the proposition that this current world system is headed for a colossal undoing. Does the constant redecorating of my house just to keep up with current trends really matter? Does a scratch on my new car bother me more than the sin in my own heart? Is my investment in another vacation or summer home important compared to my investment in the seeking of lost souls in this life? Are hours of television viewing a worthy endeavor compared to the saturation of my mind with the living Word of God? To put it another way, what am I doing? What kind of person am I?

A temptation of the enemy is to get us to live moments in light of the here and now, rather than in light of the immense change just on the horizon. Hebrews 10:37 (NIV) describes it this way, “For in just a very little while, ‘He who is coming will come and will not delay.'” He will come in just a very little while. Though the end of this current world seems so far away, it comes upon us quickly. Our timeless God does not view events as we do. He knows Jesus will be coming back soon. We need to listen to God’s truth and prepare ourselves in light of what He knows – not what our opinion or feeling is. We may not sense the return of the Lord while we brush our teeth in the morning, but the truth remains. Though I do not always feel the reality of the impending eradication of the world, I need to operate according to that truth.

The entire Bible is God’s Word. Everything will be destroyed. Then righteousness will reign in the Person of Jesus Christ. So, what kind of person should I be?

What if the Sun Went Dark?

We count on the rising of the sun. We take for granted that the moon will shine at night. We expect the stars to stay in place, twinkling through the darkness. Though humans may never ponder exactly why we hold these assumptions, the clear answer is the created order of our God. The Creator “gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night . . . the LORD of hosts is his name” (Jeremiah 31:35, ESV). Yes, He is the Lord of hosts! He is the Master of that which goes forth, including angelic beings and heavenly bodies.

Precisely because the order of the heavens is so regular and very much taken for granted, the words of Matthew 24:29 (ESV) ring forebodingly in our ears, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” Imagine it. Whether we take these words of Jesus literally, figuratively, or as a combination of the two, Christ means for us to know that He is going to shake things up in a way as never before. The natural ordinances on which we had depended will suddenly evaporate, as God Almighty displays His power for judgment, accountability, and newness. The Boss of the sun and stars will demand the heavenly bodies change their course and usher in a cataclysmic shift to a new order. As radically as Jesus Christ can make a person’s spirit new by the power of His blood, so will he radically recreate the cosmos.

Make no mistake about it; the beginning of the miraculous change is marked by fundamental, unexpected feats and by a judgment that will shock unbelievers at their core. Matthew 24:30 (ESV) goes on to instruct, “Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Notice the word “mourn.” People from every part of the earth will wail as they realize – once and for all – that Jesus changes everything. Sadly, unbelievers will then know that God will be recognized for who He is, whether willingly in the present, or by mandate in the future. All the world will ultimately realize what believers now know – Jesus is in charge!

On that day, the clouds of heaven will not float peacefully against a blue sky. Rather, the clouds will escort the very Son of Man to the earth He has created. With power and glory untold, Jesus will begin the necessary task of judging wrong and rewarding right. He will return to do what He has promised – deliver His people from a twisted existence to enjoy Him forever.

Are you ready for the essential, inexplicable change about to occur in the heavens? When you see Jesus, will you grieve because you have not responded to His forgiveness, or will you rejoice in that power and great glory which will materialize just as He promised?

The shakeup is coming. The next time you stand in the light of that old sun, or dream upon a star, or delight in the moon’s glow; think about the words of Jesus Christ. He means what He says.

Tracing God’s Heart through Geography and History: The Mount of Olives

Today in the Middle East, just to the right of Jerusalem, stands the Mount of Olives. This mountain is separated from the great city by a narrow area called the Kidron Valley. The Mount of Olives is approximately one mile long and rises to 2,680 feet above sea level. This mountain tells us much about the heart of God. For, God is the God of geography and history. Too many people today think the true God is “spiritual only,” but He is God over every realm! He is Lord over geography because He made this terrestrial ball and the entire universe (Psalm 121:2), and He is Lord over history because He stands outside of time as the “Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13).

What does this actual, geographical location reveal to us about the heart of God? Let’s look at three things:

1) In Luke 21:37, we learn that Jesus would actually rest on the Mount of Olives following long days of teaching disciples. Our Savior would close His eyes and sleep on the mount at night. This amazes me, because Matthew 26:38 reveals that at this same place – the Mount of Olives – Jesus was nearly overwhelmed by the weight of the sacrifice He would make for the sins of the world. You see, the Garden of Gethsemane – where Jesus prayed right before His arrest and crucifixion – lies on the western slope of the Mount of Olives. Our Savior commenced His unimaginable suffering at the very place He rested so many other days before. I am ashamed to say that there have been times I can hardly sleep at night if I know I have an impending difficult time ahead; yet, Jesus rested in the very place He knew He would carry the weight of human sin. Jesus Christ could rest because He knew that His plan would prevail in the end, no matter how dark the time at hand.

The Mount of Olives reminds us that we can rest in the midst of difficult circumstances and while facing an unknown future because God is in control.

I love it! “This Jesus”! Not another Jesus, but the very same One who walked with them, hugged them, ate with them, was nailed to a cross for them, resurrected for them, walked with them again in His new, glorified body; and ate fish with them in His new, glorified body – this Jesus would return to this earth! The Jesus that was put in the tomb is the Jesus that came out of the tomb and is the Jesus who will return on day. Similarly, the same me that dies physically is the same me that will rise physically and enjoy what Jesus prepares one day. Because of Him, we live too!

The Mount of Olives reminds us that a very real Jesus is coming back to this earth to make a home of righteousness for us to enjoy with Him in very real, glorified bodies.

Just as God provided a way of escape for His people when they were caught between the Red Sea and the approaching Egyptians, so He will provide a way of escape when the Antichrist and all the godless armies seek to destroy God’s remnant of people. Nothing stops God’s plan. In a real and tangible way, Jesus will once again be seen on the Mount of Olives.

The Mount of Olives reminds us that Jesus is in charge of this world and all of history. He will provide the way of escape for His people and usher in the beginning of His, perfect kingdom.

Allow the God of all history and geography to strengthen your heart with the truths about one, particular location in the Middle East. The Mount of Olives is very important to Jesus, and it should be very important to us, too.
